BREED STANDARS

There are three different standards which can control the breeding. Dogs in different countries are valued according to the rules of the country.
The FCI (Federation Cynologicue Internationale) has one standard. All the Europian countries except Great Britain follow these rules. They are written in the country of the origin of the breed, Germany.
Read them in Finnish or in English.
The British Kennel Club (KC), which is an indipendent organization has its own standard for the Dobermann breed. Read the British standard.
The third standard has been written in the USA for the American Kennel Club (AKC). Here is the
American standard.

DISEASES AND PROBLEMS

We can no longer consider Dobermann as a modell of a healthy breed. That does not mean that we have introduced new diseases to the breed. Rather it means that we recognize them easier today with modern veterinary equippment but also because the homogeneity has increased and we are loosing the very important genetic diversity. Many earlier unknown diseases pop up because of the homozygosity of deleterious alleles.

There is a need to divide the problems in our breed into subgroups according their importance to the individual and the breed. There are diseases which are of fatal and bring great difficulties in the breeding. At the same time there are defects which we traditionally have been focused on, possibly too much. Read more about the diseases we have to think about when talking about a Dobermann breed.
